Chapter 39

Time seemed to stand still. The clock on the wall moved so slowly that Michael was convinced it was broken. He played the coming events over and over in his mind, making sure he knew the outcome of every possible scenario.

His biggest hope was that he’d meet Adler and his family at the designated place and that everything would go smoothly. He’d been on tenterhooks ever since he’d taken the mission and he couldn’t wait to be safely over the border where he could hand him over to someone else.

Late in the evening, he was surprised when Mother knocked on his door and entered, carrying a package in her hand. “This is for you,” she said, holding it out to him. “It’s something we use here in Germany when we don’t want things to be found and I thought it might be useful for you on this mission.”

“What is it?” Michael asked.

“Look and see.”

Michael took the package from her and discovered a new black rucksack similar to the one he already owned. “What’s this for?” he asked. “I already have one.”

“Not one like that, you don’t,” she replied.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Let me show you.”

Mother spent the next ten minutes showing him three secret compartments hidden in the rucksack. It had a false bottom and two secret pockets built into the walls.

“These will be difficult for anyone to find other than a trained agent searching for such things. It’s useful for storing identification papers or anything that you don’t want prying eyes to see, should you be stopped and searched,” she explained.

“Thank you,” Michael said.

He emptied the contents of his regular rucksack onto the bed and sorted through them. He took the emergency set of false papers he’d recovered from the SIS drop at Frauenkirche and hid them in one of the side compartments. The rest he left for later, should he need it.

When he was alone again, Michael lay back on the bed and rested his eyes.

Who knows when I’ll get to sleep again?

And yet, try as he may, sleep wouldn’t come. Every little detail replayed over and over in his mind as he tried to find a solution to every scenario he might face in the coming days.

One thing that kept cropping up was how Mother knew about his mission. As far as he was aware, she hadn’t been told anything, so how did she know? Was she bluffing? If so, why?

He trusted her and not for a moment did he suspect her of being a Nazi spy, but it bothered him all the same.

As the minutes ticked by, Michael felt the tension rising in the pit of his stomach. He struggled to remain calm, his mind never far from the fear of capture. He was under no illusions about what he was about to undertake; it was the most dangerous thing he’d ever done.

Escaping through the Black Forest was one thing, but helping a senior member of the Sicherheitsdienst escape the clutches of the SS
